I was the only person on the beach that was not Hispanic. I felt unwelcome, and uncomfortable. Once again I could not understand the language. I m sure many of the beach goers could speak English, but they weren t. While in California I talked with professionals from all over the state, it was a trade conference. In some areas there was a very big concern that the local schools, as well as low income assistance programs were being overrun with immigrants, many which had broken the law to get here. The taxes generated from their low income, and seasonal work, was very low compared to the population increase. This was placing undue hardship on the hardworking, educated, middle class trying to raise their own children and provide a better way of life for their own families. It is also creating segregated areas because of the extreme differences in two separate cultures. We have strife and difficulties all over the world today, as we always had. Many in Darfur today are facing genocide, yet we do not provide for mass exodus from that county. Despite the advances that have been made, many third world countries have many greater problems than our Catholic brothers and sisters in Mexico. I do not believe many in this country want to simply close the boarders, and mistreat the immigrants already here illegally. What we want is reasonable law and order, fairness, and justice. It is easy to point out the wrongs of a society, quite another thing to remedy the injustice in a fashion that is fair and just to all. Sincerely, Your brother in Christ. McRaith Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro 600 Locust Street Owensboro, Kentucky 42301 June 25, 2007 Most Reverend Bishop McRaith, cc Father Brian Robey I wanted to share with you my joy over the arrival of our newest priest Father Brian Robey. I have met Father Robey and discussed some of the issues of my group, FATHERS, while he was at St. Thomas Moore. His energy, spirit, and voice fill St. Francis. I have enjoyed and appreciated all of the priests that I have had the privilege of celebrating mass with at St. Francis, however I suppose it s just a natural thing to connect with some more than others. I certainly do appreciate Father Willet s contributions to St. Francis. He came at a difficult time, and had to shoulder the burdens of a strife he did not create. I also wanted to share my thoughts regarding the church s stand toward the immigration problems we face today. Although I do agree with church s stand toward our Hispanic brothers and sisters, I have been concerned that we are taking one side of this issue, and somewhat ignoring the other. We should always concern ourselves with the struggles of the poor and underprivileged, helping lend a hand up, being wary of lending a handout. However unchecked immigration is not only unfair to this county, it is greatly unfair to those wishing to immigrate while obeying the laws and rules of our immigration policies. There are many other issues to be concerned with as well. I travel to Texas often, I will be there Tuesday. Many, many of the billboards, signs, ads, directions, etc. are in Spanish. I can t read them. Many of the radio stations are Spanish, and although I do enjoy the music, I can t understand a word they say.
