He agreed completely. This is wrong! A marriage is a bond and contract between a man and a woman with obligations, duties, and responsibilities. When that marriage produces a child, a lifelong commitment has been made! If you break an agreement with Verizon there are legal steps that can be taken. Yet if the marriage contract is broken, even by adultery including homosexual behavior, our local court will not even allow this information to be admitted in our so called Family Court . (FATHERS can provide witnesses to testify to this fact.) Option for the Poor and Vulnerable Scripture teaches that God has a special concern for the poor and vulnerable.18 The prophets denounced injustice toward the poor as a lack of fidelity to the God of Israel.19 Jesus, who identified himself with "the least of these",20 came to preach "good news to the poor, liberty to captives . . . and to set the downtrodden free."21 The Church calls on all of us to embrace this preferential option for the poor and vulnerable,22 to embody it in our lives, and to work to have it shape public policies and priorities. A fundamental measure of our society is how we care for and stand with the poor and vulnerable. FATHERS, newspaper ad, Sept. 14, 2004 Who is Judging Us ? Many of our judges today have 8 years of college and are highly trained professionals. They have spent their nights and weekends working hard. What most lack however, is the practical experience of sitting on a river bank with a fishing pole in their hand beside their child, or coaching the little league team their child is on. Some of those that sit in judgment over divorce anCHNKWKS jјџџџџTEXTTEXTјPFDPPFDPPTFDPCFDPCVFDPCFDPCXFDPCFDPCZFDPCFDPC\STSHSTSH^hSTSHSTSHh_ЂSYIDSYID bSGP SGP bINK INK "bBTEPPLC &bBTECPLC >b0FONTFONTnbpSTRSPLC оb:PRNTWNPRcDFRAMFRAM\hˆTITLTITLфhRDOP DOP 6i"[The Church] does not wish to exercise political power or eliminate the freedom of opinion of Catholics regarding contingent questions. Instead, it intends--as is its proper function--to instruct and illuminate the consciences of the faithful, particularly those involved in political life, so that their actions may always serve the integral promotion of the human person and the common good.10 We urge our fellow citizens "to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest."11 As bishops, we seek to form the consciences of our people. We do not wish to instruct persons on how they should vote by endorsing or opposing candidates. We hope that voters will examine the position of candidates on the full range of issues, as well as on their personal integrity, philosophy, and performance. We are convinced that a consistent ethic of life should be the moral framework from which to address issues in the political arena. 12 Call to Family, Community, and Participation The human person is not only sacred, but social. The God-given institutions of marriage--a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman--and family are central and serve as the foundations for social life. Marriage and family should be supported and strengthened, not undermined. Every person has a right to participate in social, economic, and political life and a corresponding duty to work for the advancement of the common good and the well-being of all, especially the poor and weak. FATHERS, section 1, letter to Carroll Hubbard 1: Strengthen the bond of marriage in the eye s of the court. At a FATHERS meeting some time back Judge Bill Cunningham was kind enough to speak. Afd custody cases have been divorced up to 3 times themselves. Some have never raised children. Who would hire someone to build them a house because they have read books on the subject, but never actually built a house? Or hire a mechanic who can t keep his own car running? Many of these judges are heavily influenced by the clothes we wear and our physical appearance. They see farmer s overalls and think of hired hand, not hard working dad. Some judges have issues remaining from their own divorces. In many cases their minds are made up before we ever open our mouths. Judges must be held accountable to common sense, sound reason, and the long term well-being of our children. Join us. Let s fix this. Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God's act of creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers, owners, and others must be respected the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to organize and choose to join a union, to economic initiative, and to ownership and private property. These rights must be exercised in ways that advance the common good. FATHERS members wages are garnished for child support up to 65% after taxes. Most still have to hire lawyers to fight to see their children on top of this amount. This leaves us living with relatives or in friend s garages. Promoting Family Life God established the family as the basic cell of human society. Therefore, we must strive to make the needs and concerns of families a central national priority. Marriage must be protected as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman and our laws should reflect this principle.. Marriage, as God intended, provides the basic foundation for family life and the common good. It must be supported in the face of the many pressures working to undermine it. Policies related to the definition of marriage, taxes, the workplace, divorce, and welfare must be designed to help families stay together and to reward responsibility and sacrifice for children. Because financial and economic factors have such an impact on the well-being and stability of families, it is important that just wages be paid to those who work to support their families and that generous efforts be made to aid poor families. FATHERS commentary EPO/DVO Death Warrant for the American Family The American Family has many enemies at the present time. The federal marriage penalty tax, federal incentives for awarding and collecting child support, state judges that think social workers can not only replace parents but do a better job of parenting, and lawyers that make more money the more bitter the fight is between the parents. But the single worst blow to the American Family is the restraining order that is almost 100% effective in ending any possibility of reconciliation, and is the first step in terminating the accused parent s relationship with their child, (in most cases the father). In signing unwarranted restraining orders the judge is issuing what amounts to nothing less that a death warrant for that family, as a family. The further abuse of the restraining order is when the alleged victim surprisingly shows up where the accused parent is and the court arrests and jails the accused parent just to be on the safe side. It s no wonder that an EPO is known in the legal community in Kentucky as a slam dunk . There is no defense against these charges even when they are completely false. The EPO/DVO isolates the parents, thus forcing any communication between them to be through a lawyer, (whose primary incentive is money and power). The EPO/DVO isolates the accused parent from their child, (sometimes for months). The accused parent has to hire a lawyer, prove their innocence, and set a hearing date to reinstate visitation , all while hoping and praying that the alleged victim does not set them up again simply by showing up where the accused parent is. Many times this chance meeting will occur when the accused parent simply shows up to see the children in a meeting designated by the court. In Kentucky there are presently no legal repercussions for filing false EPOs and no limit as to how many EPOs one person can file. (See court video on our web page www.kyfathers.org under Jerry Nichols- False EPOs). Children must be protected and nurtured. We affirm our commitment to the protection of children in all settings and at all times, and we support policies that ensure that the well-being of all children is safeguarded. This is reflected within our Church in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People and other policies adopted by our bishops' conference and dioceses to ensure the safety of children. FATHERS, email sent 10/14/06 Thomas Murphy Program Manager Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, KY Dear Thomas,     Why does your department focus almost 100% of your efforts on the domestic violence perpetrated by the brief outbursts of an overly emotional parent, and completely ignore the devastating long term impact of separating a child from one of the parents and that parent's entire side of the family sometimes for life?     Why does your department ignore the false and fabricated EPOs that send police officers bursting into homes to remove children from a parent, (with nearly the same tactics as if that parent were a terrorist suspect), simply to gain an advantage in court? Can you even imagine what it does to a child to be forcibly removed from a loving parent by strangers with guns in uniforms, placed in the back of a police cruiser, and hauled away with complete strangers? (Ask James Jeffries little four year old boy). It was later proven that the charges were fabricated simply to gain an advantage in the custody hearing. One of the police officers later came to James' house and apologized. (Also see Jerry Nichols' story and court video top right on our web page.)     Why does your department turn a blind eye to judges that ignore the domestic violence of one parent using a child as a pawn against the other in court, also known as PAS, Parental Alienation Syndrome?     Mental and emotional abuse is domestic violence! Why does the State of Kentucky turn a blind eye to the devastating long term impact of mental and emotional abuse? Where do you think the offenders of today came from? By ignoring these problems you are creating a whole new generation of abusers 15 to 20 years from now.
